How Singers Keep Their Voice Healthy

Let’s do some dreaming and imagine that covid-19 is nonexistent and that live shows are going on every night in almost every bar in town. You and your friends go out to grab a drink one night and sample the local bands. You spend the whole night enamoured by the lead singer at one of the bars and decide to invest in yourself and learn to sing. You’re going to hire a vocal coach, but before you do, you want to make sure your voice is healthy.

What do you do?

It’s Friday night and live shows are going on in almost every bar in town. You and your friends go out to grab a drink one night and sample the local bands. You spend the whole night enamoured by the lead singer at one of the bars and decide to invest in yourself and learn to sing. You’re going to hire a vocal coach, but before you do, you want to make sure your voice is healthy.

But how much is enough? I recommend drinking about 2-3 liters of water a day depending on your gender, body type, and activity level. It might sound like a lot, but your body will thank you in multiple ways! One of those being vocal health :)

Now that we’ve got that settled, anything else?

There are a few other ways to make sure you have maximal vocal health, and you guessed it! They all have to do with your physical health. Certain foods have a slight inflammatory effect on the body. You may not be able to tell unless you’re specifically allergic to these foods, but sugar, processed foods, dairy products, and alcohol all cause your body to react with inflammation. Avoiding these foods for 8-10 hours prior to any heavy singing will help you maintain optimal vocal health.

When it comes to vocal performance, regular practice is your best friend. Your voice, like any other muscle in your body, will get used to regular exercise and become better at a skill over time. Last tip of the blog, regular cardiovascular exercise is a great way to increase vocal performance and health. (oh shit Spike is telling me to exercise again!) Your singing voice is supported by your core muscles, and as such, having healthy and active core muscles will help you get an edge on others when it comes to vocal performance!
